I don’t geddit. Habis tu macam mana kau tengok King Kong (’33) dengan segala stop motion dia? Those effects wouldn’t even bat an eyelid now either.

Dialog ‘mak’ yang diucapkan 2 kali dalam 2 scene yang berbeza dan intonasi yang berlainan, dan diakhiri dengan scene tangan yang diikat dan berlumuran darah, memang menakjubkan!

Pembikinannya memang mendahului masanya. Tak sangka Orang malaysia mampu buat filem pendek yang bagus seperti itu!

Sungguh ‘awal 90an’!

that’s why i mentioned sikit aje. in a way, Blade Runner is timeless because it’s so different from the future we expect. but from a futuretro ‘noir’ movie point of view, the phone booth, the ceiling fans etc would suit perfectly.

not only do i find the way some movies depict ‘future’ (future in relation to when that movie was shot, that is) technologies funny, i also found the way they use technology current at that time in their movies to be to era specific. a good example would be the T-1000 character morphing effects in Terminator 2. Those effects wouldnt even bat an eyelid now.

in the end, movies that represent the era that they were shot in would be as close as timeless to me. movies like Rebel Without A Cause, Singles, Breakfast Club etc.

Aku tak rasa Blade Runner is timeless at all. Vangelis’ score is so 80s’, man. Dan kalau betul kau seorang yang detail, takkan kau tak perasan masa scene Deckard nak contact Rachael via a phone call, dia tak contact minah tu pakai a teensy, tiny handphone. No, dia straight ke phone booth. A phone booth? Serius, siapa ada nampak phone booths dalam tahun 2008 (in Malaysia!) let alone 2019?

Dan aku totally OK with that! Walaupun Ridley Scott dah punch up the film a bit dengan Final Cut dia, aku happy dia tak buat dengan cara that Spielberg and Lucas have done with their films. Aku tak faham the idea yang timelessness adalah suatu quality movies should strive to achieve. To me ni bukan takat bodoh je, it’s quixotic and impossible, atas beberapa sebab ranging from the technical to the artistic.

Aku suka the way that films feel of their era, dan lebih dari itu, aku enjoy the little peeks into the past. Sebuah filem made in the 60s will reveal attitudes and assumptions completely lain from the modern day; kalau the story and the performances and the movie itself are good, these peeks lebih kurang macam bonuses la. Of course if the film is bad, they can become the whole experience – macam tulah you end up with kitsch pictures. I can only watch Death Race 2000 because it’s so of its time, bukan sebab it’s a remarkably good movie.

Pada pendapat aku, butolah “timelessness.” Aku rasa a lot of the people yang suka nitpick macam ni bukan sebab dia ni jenis teliti ke apa, more like jenis orang yang doesn’t know where to look bila tonton satu-satu filem tu.
